The white-throated kingfisher (scientifically known as Halcyon smyrnensis), also referred to as the white-breasted kingfisher, is a tree kingfisher found across a wide range in Asia. Let’s explore some fascinating details about this colorful bird.
- Distribution and Range:
- The white-throated kingfisher is widely distributed from the Sinai Peninsula in the west, through the Indian subcontinent, and all the way to China and Indonesia 1.
- It is a resident species in most of its range, although some populations may make short-distance movements.
- Physical Characteristics:
- This kingfisher boasts a striking appearance:
- Large-headed with predominantly brown plumage.
- Electric-blue back and wings add a vibrant touch.
- A heavy red bill that stands out.
- A snow-white patch extends from the throat through the breast.
- You can often spot them perched on fence posts, telephone lines, and other prominent spots near wetlands, lakes, agricultural fields, and clearings.
- Taxonomy and Subspecies:
- The white-throated kingfisher was first formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758.
- The specific epithet “smyrnensis” refers to the city of Smyrna (now İzmir in Turkey) 1.
- Five recognized subspecies include:
- H. s. smyrnensis: Found from south Turkey to northeast Egypt, Iraq to northwest India.
- H. s. fusca: Occurs in west India and Sri Lanka.
- H. s. perpulchra: Ranges from Bhutan to east India, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, and west Java.
- H. s. saturatior: Restricted to the Andaman Islands.
- H. s. fokiensis: Found in south and east China, Taiwan, and Hainan.
- The brown-breasted kingfisher (H. gularis) of the Philippines is now considered a separate species 1.

- Various local names exist for this charismatic bird across different regions:
- Baluchistan: aspi chidok
- Sindhi: dalel
- Hindi: kilkila, kourilla
- Bengali: sandabuk machhranga
- Assamese: māsorokā, মাছৰোকা
