Project Description

The Common Four-ring (Ypthima huebneri) is a species of butterfly found in Asia. It belongs to the Satyrinae subfamily. 

  • Wet-season form:
    • Upperside: Greyish brown.
    • Forewing: Features a comparatively large, bi-pupilled, yellow-ringed, black preapical ocellus.
    • Hindwing: Usually has two (sometimes three) smaller uni-pupilled postdiscal ocelli.
    • Underside: Greyish white, with transverse short brown striae.
    • Male: Lacks secondary sex marks.
  • Dry-season form:
    • Similar to wet-season form but somewhat paler on both upper and underside.
    • Ocelli on the hindwing are minute or absent.
  • Wingspan: Adults have a wingspan of 40–43 mm.
  • Racial variation:
    • Var. jocularia: Pale form from Western India.
    • Race kashmira: Differs from the typical form in darker and more uniform upperside color, dull brownish underside, and non-fasciated wings.
    • Race ceylonica: Upperside Vandyke brown to dark sepia brown, with white hindwing and small posterior ocelli.
