Project Description

Kaniska canace, the blue admiral, is a nymphalid butterfly, the only species of the genus Kaniska. It is found in south and southeast Asia.

  • Description:

    • The Blue Admiral has a wingspan of about 60–70 millimeters (2.4–2.8 inches).
    • On the upperside, both forewings and hindwings are black.
    • The underside features a combination of black and brown.
    • Notable markings include:
      • blue band at the wavy outer edge of the forewings.
      • blue or white spot at the wing leading edge.
      • A little white spot in the wing tip.
      • Hindwings display a wide blue transversal band with small black spots and a narrow blue band at the outer wavy edge.
  • Habitat and Range:

    • The Blue Admiral is found in south and southeast Asia.
    • Its range extends from southeastern Siberia in the north to KoreaJapanTaiwanIndiaSri LankaMyanmar, and certain regions of Indonesia.
  • Ecological Significance:
