 Let’s explore the fascinating Heliocypha bisignata, commonly known as the stream rubyThis damselfly species is endemic to South India, where it thrives in hill streams in the southern part of the country.

  • Appearance:
    • The stream ruby is a small damselfly with a black head and large eyes.
    • Its thorax is black, adorned with pink marks on the dorsum and yellow stripes on the lateral sides.
    • The forewings are transparent, with the outer fourth appearing opaque in bright copper colors.
    • The hindwings have an outer third that is opaque, marked by two series of vitreous spots that glow with a copper or violet reflex.
    • The abdomen is black, featuring yellow mid-lateral stripes and dots in segments 2 to 6.
    • Females have more subdued colors and transparent wings, with a black pterostigma (wing spot) and a pale creamy center.
  • Habitat and Behavior:
    • Male stream rubies are often found perched on rocks, floating logs, and grasses in forest streams.
    • Occasionally, they take flight, revealing their glistening wing patches.
    • Females lay their eggs in submerged logs within forest streams.
