Project Description

The Urothemis signata, commonly known as the greater crimson glider or scarlet basker. This dragonfly species is widespread in many Asian countries and belongs to the family Libellulidae.

Appearance:

    • The greater crimson glider is a medium-sized dragonfly with striking features.
    • Both males and females have red eyes, thorax, and abdomen.
    • Their wings are transparent, with an amber-colored spot surrounded by a dark-brown patch at the base of the hindwings.
    • The abdomen is vivid blood-red, with some black markings on the dorsum of segments 8 and 9.
    • Female individuals are similar to males but have a yellowish coloration. The black spots on the dorsum are repeated on segments 3 to 7.
    • Juvenile and sub-adult males also exhibit these distinctive markings12.
  • Habitat:
    • This species breeds in ponds and slow-flowing rivers, typically found in lowland areas.
    • Males are often seen perching on exposed twigs.
    • Interestingly, the greater crimson glider has managed to colonize urban water bodies and park ponds, adapting to various environments .
