Macrogomphus wynaadicus, also known as the Wayanad Bowtail or Wayanad Forktail, is a medium-sized dragonfly native to the Western Ghats of India. It is a rare species, as indicated by the lack of published records. It is endemic to the Western Ghats of India.
Description: Macrogomphus wynaadicus is a medium-sized dragonfly. Its thorax is black, with two thick yellow ante-humeral stripes. The abdomen is also black, marked with citron-yellow paired spots. Notably, segment 2 has a dorsal stripe broken at its center, and segment 3 has a large base-lateral dorsal spot. Segments 4 to 6 have similar, but smaller spots. Segment 7 has the basal half marked with yellow, while segments 8 and 9 have baso-lateral triangular spots. Segment 8 is very broad, and segment 9 tapers from base to apex, nearly as long as segments 7 and 8 combined, which is peculiar for the genus Macrogomphus.
Habitat: This dragonfly species is found in forested streams where it breeds. It prefers these habitats for its life cycle. Interestingly, adults are relatively rare, making sightings even more special.
