Project Description

The Quaker butterfly (Neopithecops zalmora) is a small butterfly found in South Asia and Southeast Asia. 

  • Description:
    • The Quaker butterfly has a dark purplish-brown upper side with slightly paler disc on the forewing in females. The underside is white with slender brown markings.
    • The hindwing also has similar markings, including a curved, irregular line of detached pale ashy-brown lunules.
    • During the dry season, the Quaker butterfly has a large oval snow-white spot on the forewing and irregular white markings on the hindwing.
    • Antennae, head, thorax, and abdomen are dark brown.
  • Distribution:
    • Found in India (Eastern Himalayas, Bengal, Orissa, Western Ghats), Sri Lanka, Assam, Myanmar, Tenasserim, and the Andamans.
  • Food Plants:
    • The caterpillars feed on Diospyros (Ebenaceae) and various species of Glycosmis (Rutaceae), including G. arborea, G. parviflora, and G. pentaphylla.
