Project Description

The long-tailed shrike (Lanius schach), also known as the rufous-backed shrike or bay-backed shrike, is a striking songbird native to Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

  • Description: The long-tailed shrike measures about 20 cm in length and weighs approximately 35 g. It has a distinctive silhouette, characterized by its elongated black tail. Across its range, there are variations in plumage, but all subspecies share common features: a black mask and forehead, rufous rump and flanks, and a small white patch on the shoulder. The eastern subspecies (L. s. tricolor) is sometimes called the black-headed shrike. It forms a superspecies with the grey-backed shrike (Lanius tephronotus) that breeds on the Tibetan Plateau.

  • Distribution: Long-tailed shrikes are widely distributed across Asia, both on the mainland and the eastern archipelagos. They inhabit dry, open habitats and are adaptable to various environments.
