Project Description

The Jungle Owlet (Glaucidium radiatum), also known as the barred jungle owlet, is a captivating bird native to the Indian Subcontinent. As an enthusiast of wildlife and birdwatching, you’ll appreciate the intriguing habits and unique features of this species.

  • Description:

    • This small owl has a rounded head and lacks ear tufts.
    • Its plumage is a mix of brown, rufous, white, and cream.
    • Bright yellow eyes add to its distinctive appearance.
    • The legs are covered in feathers nearly down to the toes.
    • When it flies, a conspicuous reddish patch on its underwing catches the eye.
  • Habitat and Distribution:

    • Jungle Owlets are found in various habitats, ranging from scrub forests to deciduous and moist deciduous forests.
    • Their distribution extends south of the Himalayas and includes parts of the Himalayas up to an elevation of 2,000 meters (6,600 feet).
    • They occur from Dalhousie in the west to Bhutan in the east.
  • Behavior and Ecology:

    • Jungle Owlets are mainly active at dawn and dusk, but they can also call and fly during the daytime.
    • Their distinctive call consists of a rapid series of “prao…prao.prao-prao-prao” that increases and then fades in volume before abruptly ending.
    • During the day, young nestlings produce tick calls similar to those of a pale-billed flowerpecker.
    • When disturbed, Jungle Owlets freeze and appear like dead tree stumps inside tree cavities.
    • They may also perch prominently on wires or bask in the morning sun before retiring to their roosts.
    • Interestingly, they have been observed capturing small Phylloscopus warblers during the day.
