Project Description

The Indian red admiral (Vanessa indica) is a captivating butterfly found primarily in the higher altitude regions of India, including the Himalayas and the Nilgiri Hills. It also graces Sri Lanka, Myanmar, China, Korea, Southeast Russia, and Japan. As a close relative of the painted lady, this butterfly exhibits distinctive features that set it apart from other species.

  • Appearance:

    • Wingspan: Approximately 5 inches (13 cm).
    • Ground color: Darker on both the upper and lower sides compared to the painted lady.
    • Orange markings: Deeper and richer in tint.
    • Underside forewing: Ochraceous orange-red, with uniform color and small preapical spots.
    • Hindwing: Features a narrower postdiscal transverse band with black subcrescentic marks.
    • Overall, the Indian red admiral boasts vibrant red wings adorned with intricate patterns.
  • Habitat:

    • Found in higher altitudes, especially in the Himalayas and Nilgiri Hills.
    • Also occurs in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and other Asian countries.
  • Behavior and Ecology:

    • Not reported as a pest on crops, but it can cause damage to ramie plants by feeding on young tender leaves.
    • The larvae (caterpillars) feed on tender leaves, leading to characteristic leaf folding and subsequent pupation inside the folded leaf.
  • Conservation and Appreciation:

    • As an enthusiast of wildlife and nature conservation, you’ll appreciate the Indian red admiral’s role in its ecosystem.
    • Its striking appearance and presence in the Himalayan region make it a delightful subject for your photography endeavors.
