Project Description

Panchalimedu, also known as Sree Bhuvaneshwari Devi Temple, is a hill station and viewpoint near Kuttikkanam in the Peerumedu tehsil of Idukki district in the Indian state of Kerala. 

  1. Etymology: The name “Panchalimedu” is derived from “Panchali” (referring to Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata) and “Medu” (meaning hill). Thus, it translates to the “Hill of Panchali.”

  2. Topography and Surroundings:

    • Panchalimedu is situated at an altitude of 3,080 feet (940 meters) above sea level.
    • The area is characterized by deep valleys, hills, meadows, grasslands, and a cool, refreshing climate.
    • From Panchalimedu, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Koruthodu valley near Mundakkayam, which is adorned with rubber plantations.
    • Parunthumpara hills and the Periyar tiger reserve lie to the east of Panchalimedu.
    • Tourists often visit during the summer season for trekking and rejuvenation.
    • Monsoons bring charming mist and thick fog, creating a mystical atmosphere.
    • The pleasant climate persists throughout the year.
