Project Description

The Nagarhole National Park is one of the best habitats of Asiatic Elephant, also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, is an enchanting wild reserve located in the Kodagu and Mysore districts of Karnataka, India. Let’s delve into the wonders of this remarkable park:

Wildlife Diversity:
- Nagarhole National Park is home to over 270 species of birds, 60 species of mammals, 50 species of reptiles, and 120 species of trees.
- It boasts one of the highest densities of tigers in India, with an estimated population of 72 individuals.
- The park also hosts the largest congregation of Asiatic elephants in the world, with over 6,000 individuals¹.
Geography and Ecology:
- The park spans an area of 643 square kilometers and lies in the foothills of the Western Ghats.
- It stretches down the Brahmagiri hills and south towards Kerala state.
- The Kabini River separates Nagarhole National Park from the adjoining Bandipur National Park.
- Elevations within the park range from 687 to 960 meters above sea level.
- The park receives an annual rainfall of 1,440 millimeters and is blessed with water sources like the Kabini River, perennial streams, and artificial tanks ².
Flora and Fauna:
- The vegetation includes North Western Ghats moist deciduous forests dominated by teak and roseta rosewood.
- Wildlife sightings include Bengal tigers, gaurs, Indian elephants, Indian leopards, chital, and Sambar deer.
- Nagarhole is also a peaceful haven for jungle mynas perched on chital rumps and antlers ³.
