The great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is a robust seabird with predominantly black plumage. It belongs to the cormorant family and has a widespread distribution. Here are some

Appearance:
- The great cormorant is a large bird, with males generally being larger and heavier than females.
- Its size can vary significantly across its range, from approximately 1.5 kg (3 lb 5 oz) to 5.3 kg (11 lb 11 oz).
- The species is known for its almost prehistoric appearance, with a reptilian neck and a distinctive silhouette.
- During breeding season, it develops a white throat patch and a white patch on the thigh.
Distribution:
- The great cormorant breeds in much of the Old World, Australia, and the Atlantic coast of North America.
- Geographically distinct subspecies are recognized, including those found in Europe, Africa, and Japan.
- In New Zealand, it is known as the “black shag” or by its Māori name, "kawau".
Behavior:
