Project Description

The Tiny Grass Blue (Zizula hylax) is a delightful little butterfly found in various regions across tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

  • Description:

    • Male Upperside: The male Tiny Grass Blue has a dull violet-blue color, which brightens to a more vibrant violet in certain lighting conditions. The forewing has a narrow brown costa (leading edge) and a broader brown termen (trailing edge). The hindwing is brighter than the forewing, with brown margins.
    • Underside: The underside is gray. The forewing features dusky brown lunular lines, subcostal spots, and a jet-black anteciliary line. The hindwing has white-encircled black spots and similar markings.
    • Female Upperside: Females lack the violet tint seen in males. Their upperside is glossy brown, and the anteciliary lines are well-marked.
    • Wingspan: Approximately 1.5 centimeters (0.59 inches).
  • Habitat and Distribution:

    • The Tiny Grass Blue is found in several races across India, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Eswatini, and various parts of Australia. It frequents grassy areas and grounds .
    • Keep an eye out for this butterfly around grassy patches and open spaces—it might be small, but its presence is significant!
