Neurothemis tullia, commonly known as the pied paddy skimmer, is a captivating species of dragonfly found in South and Southeast Asia.
Description: The pied paddy skimmer is a black dragonfly with a pale yellow mid-dorsal carina on its thorax. Its wings are hyaline (transparent) for the apical half and opaque steely blue-black for the basal half, bordered by a milky white patch toward the tip. Interestingly, females differ remarkably from males both in body coloring and wing markings. Female bodies are greenish-yellow with a bright yellow mid-dorsal carina on the thorax. The base of their wings is amber yellow, followed by a blackish-brown patch. The apices of all wings are broadly opaque blackish-brown, and the remaining halves are pale yellow.
Habitat: These dragonflies breed in marshes, well-vegetated ponds, lakes, and rice fields. They often perch very close to the ground, and their flight is quite weak. Observing them in their natural habitat can be a delightful experience for wildlife enthusiasts like you!
