- The painted lady is one of the most widespread butterfly species, found on every continent except Antarctica and South America.
- In Australia, it has a limited range around Bunbury, Fremantle, and Rottnest Island.
- Its close relative, the Australian painted lady (Vanessa kershawi), ranges over half the continent
