Project Description

The Southern red muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak) is a deer species native to Southeast Asia. Formerly known as the Indian muntjac or the common muntjac,

കേഴമാൻ, this species was taxonomically revised to represent only populations of Sunda and perhaps Malaysia. Other populations previously attributed to this species are now assigned to the Northern red muntjac (Muntiacus vaginalis)1.

Here are some key characteristics of the Southern red muntjac:

  • Appearance:
    • Soft, short, brownish or grayish hair, sometimes with creamy markings.
    • Among the smallest deer species.
    • Males have short antlers that usually branch once near the base.
    • Large postorbital scent gland used for marking territories.
    • Canines in males.
  • Diet:
    • Omnivorous: Eats grass, fruit, shoots, seeds, bird eggs, and small animals.
    • Occasionally scavenges on carrion.
  • Behavior:
    • Calls sound like barking, often when frightened by predators (hence the common name “barking deer”).
  • Size:
    • Body length: 89–135 cm (35–53 in).
    • Tail length: 13–23 cm (5.1–9.1 in).
    • Shoulder height: 40–65 cm (16–26 in).
    • Adult weight: 13–35 kg (29–77 lb), with males larger than females.
  • Unique Features:
    • Large facial scent glands used for marking territories or attracting females.
    • Males have short antlers and elongated upper canines.
    • Soft, dense coat that varies seasonally in color.
    • Barks when alarmed12.
